When will Whitby Swing Bridge be closed?

And how will it affect your visit to whitby's historic East side?

Posted in Whitby

If you’ve visited Whitby you will have probably stopped in your tracks to watch the town’s old swing bridge swing open to allow the town’s boats to pass in and out of the upper harbour. Pedestrians have to wait at each side for the vessels to pass through before the bridge creaks back into position, the gates are opened and either side of the harbour are connected once more.

WHEN IS THE CLOSURE?

Whitby Town Council have announced that the swing bridge linking the east and west side of the town will be closed for maintenance from the 20 November 2023.

The first phase will involve full closure of the bridge to both pedestrians and vehicles and is ecpected to last two weeks.

HOW WILL THIS AFFECT YOUR VISIT?

A shuttle bus is being provided every 30 minutes between 6am and 1am, but we expect traffic will be fairly heavy as everyone is funnelled over the new bridge further out of town. We also anticipate that it may be more difficult to get parked during this time.

The works are expected to last two weeks but could take as long as 26 days.

BUSINESS AS USUAL

During this time we will be open as usual, but please allow more time to get to your barber appointments if coming over from the west side of town.

REGULAR CLOSURES

The swing bridge is regularly closed to traffic on bank holiday weekends and weekends in the school holidays, this does not affect pedestrians.
