The Purveyor #1:

Each edition celebrates what’s Beautiful, Useful and Made Properly — in Whitby and beyond.

Inside this issue: The Whitby Cobbler, The Whale Bone Arch and Whitby Sea Salt.

The Whitby Cobbler

We don’t stock shoes.

We’ve tried, but when customers ask, we’re now quite happy to send them over the swing bridge to The Whitby Cobbler.

A proper shop, run by people who know what they’re doing. Inside you’ll find a carefully chosen selection of footwear from the best British brands and beyond — well made, built to last, and chosen with the same care you’d hope to find in any independent business.

It’s not just about selling shoes, though. They’ll repair them too. Worn soles, tired heels, stitching in need of attention — all given a second life rather than being thrown away.

There’s something reassuring about that. A place that values things properly, and helps you do the same.

If you’re in Whitby and looking for a good pair of shoes, this is where we send people.

Whitby’s Whale Bone Arch

The Whalebone Arch

For over 170 years, the arch has framed one of Whitby’s most photographed views.

Set high on the West Cliff, it’s become part of the town itself — a place people naturally drift towards, whether for the view, the photograph, or simply to stand for a moment and take it all in.

But the current bones are beginning to fail.

Time and weather have taken their toll, and the Town Council now face the question of what should replace them — as real whale bones are no longer an option.

It’s a difficult decision. Whatever comes next will need to respect the history, while standing up to the conditions that come with life on the coast.

If it were up to us?

Bronze.

Whitby Sea Salt

Made using fresh seawater gathered from the North Sea, Whitby Sea Salt is about as local as it gets.

The water is collected by hand aboard a traditional coble before being reduced using nothing more than sun, wind and time. What’s left behind is a clean, mineral-rich salt that carries something of the coast with it.

It’s the kind of product that feels honest. Nothing added, nothing taken away — just a simple process done well.

Packaged in plastic-free, British-made recyclable card, even the water — once evaporated into the atmosphere — will eventually find its way back to the sea.

A product, quite literally, made of Whitby.
