Hildoceras opened its doors for the fist time in March 1974.
The shop had been purchased by our grandparents, Sid and Myra Weatherill as was then known as Weatherill’s. Myra had always dreamed of owning a shop.
They worked hard to create a shop using coffee tables for displays, and using the day’s takings to dash to the wholesalers in Middlesbrough to top up on stock, little by little as the business grew.
Sid worked hard to hand craft the cabinets that you’ll still find inside. Alongside his own job in insurance and his hobbies of diving the Whitby wrecks, preparing fossils and walking.
The shop is still run today by their daughter Karen, selling the traditional fossils, minerals and gemstones as well as a new range of unique gifts and homeware.
Karen gave the shop a refurbishment during lockdown, retaining the original cabinets made by her dad, but creating a new aesthetic with deep blue tones, copper and dark wood.
n 2019, 11 Sandgate came up for sale, and Karen shared the spark of an idea with her sons, Mark and Liam and their wives Danielle and Ceri, to open a menswear shop with a traditional barber in the back.
As a family we worked long days to transform Furbellow & Co and we’ve recently celebrated six years in business, following in the footsteps of Sid and Myra to run an independent, family-run business in the town, with traditional values and good customer service at the heart of it.
Sadly Myra passed away in September 2022 but we know she would be so proud of the legacy she has left behind. Sid and Myra have been as inspiration to us all both in our day to day lives to seek adventure and to enjoy the great outdoors, but also to work hard and follow our dreams.
