Michael May Knives – Handmade Pruning Pocket Knife – Bog Oak

Michael May Pruning Pocket Knife – Bog Oak

Handmade in Sheffield, this traditional pruning pocket knife pairs a hand-ground SF100 Stainless Steel blade with 5,000-year-old English bog oak and solid brass fittings.

It’s an essential for the keen gardener that celebrates Sheffield’s cutlery heritage while showcasing the skill of one of today’s finest independent makers.

The Blade

If you spend time in the garden, this is a wonderfully useful blade. The gentle curve makes it easier to trim around stems and take cuttings cleanly and accurately, giving you more control than a straight-edged knife. Michael uses O1 tool steel for blade. It takes an exceptionally keen edge and is easy to sharpen, making it a favourite among those who appreciate carbon steel. Like all carbon steels, it will develop a patina with use—a record of the jobs it has helped you tackle.

Bog Oak

The handle is made from English bog oak that has rested beneath peat bogs for around 5,000 years. During that time, naturally occurring minerals react with the tannins in the timber, giving it its distinctive dark colour.

Polished to a rich gloss, every handle has its own unique grain and character.

The Maker

Michael May followed family into Sheffield’s cutlery trade before forging his own path, establishing a workshop in Portland Works—the historic birthplace of stainless steel. Today he produces small batches of beautifully made pocket knives that combine traditional patterns with exceptional attention to detail.

Absolutely wonderful customer services and excellent support. I wanted a specific gansey jumper and could not find it anywhere. They were fantastic, found the jumper for me and sent it to me express delivery yesterday afternoon. Royal Mail excelled and it arrived to our surprise this morning. It is exactly what was wanted and I can't thank you enough for all your help.
