Handmade in Sheffield, this traditional ergonomic lambfoot pocket knife pairs a hand-ground SF100 Stainless Steel blade with 5,000-year-old English bog oak and solid brass fittings.

It’s a classic everyday carry that celebrates Sheffield’s cutlery heritage while showcasing the skill of one of today’s finest independent makers.

The Blade

The lambsfoot is a traditional Sheffield pattern, instantly recognisable by its straight cutting edge and gently sloping spine. Originally favoured by farmers for trimming sheep’s hooves, it has become one of Britain’s most practical everyday blades. Michael uses SF100 stainless steel, produced in Sheffield. There’s something rather satisfying about a Sheffield knife made from Sheffield steel.

Its long, straight edge makes it ideal for whittling, trimming, opening parcels and, of course, sharpening pencils.

The Pattern

Designed with comfort in mind, the Ergonomic Pattern sits naturally in the hand, making it a pleasure to use for everyday tasks. Michael first discovered the pattern through renowned Sheffield knife maker Trevor Ablett, and it is one of my favourites.

Cherry

Sourced from the woodlands around Buxton in Derbyshire, cherry is a beautifully understated handle material. Its fine, even grain is complemented by warm golden tones with subtle hints of red, giving each knife a classic, timeless appearance.

Finished with a soft satin sheen, cherry develops a richer colour as it ages. An occasional wipe with Danish or teak oil will help keep the timber looking its best for years to come.

The Maker

Michael May followed family into Sheffield’s cutlery trade before forging his own path, establishing a workshop in Portland Works—the historic birthplace of stainless steel. Today he produces small batches of beautifully made pocket knives that combine traditional patterns with exceptional attention to detail.
