Handmade in Sheffield, this Barlow pocket knife combines one of Britain’s most enduring knife patterns with polished ebony, a striking turquoise inlay and solid brass fittings.

It’s a traditional everyday carry with a subtle contemporary twist.

The Blade

One of the most recognisable pocket knife patterns, the clip point combines a fine, controllable tip with a generous curved cutting edge. The pointed tip is ideal for more detailed work, while the sweeping belly makes slicing clean and effortless. It’s a true all-rounder. Michael uses SF100 stainless steel, produced in Sheffield. There’s something rather satisfying about a Sheffield knife made from Sheffield steel.

The Pattern

The Barlow is one of the oldest and most recognisable pocket knife patterns, first produced in Sheffield during the 17th century. Instantly identified by its long bolster, it earned a reputation as a dependable working knife and became one of the most widely carried pocket knives of its time.

Available with either a traditional clip point or practical lambsfoot blade, the Barlow remains a favourite for those who appreciate simple, functional design.

Ebony & Turquoise

Ebony has been used by knife makers for generations thanks to its exceptional density and durability. Naturally ranging from deep brown to almost jet black, it takes on a beautifully polished finish that feels smooth and substantial in the hand.

The addition of turquoise provides a subtle splash of colour, creating a striking contrast with the dark timber while ensuring every knife has its own distinctive character.

The Maker

Michael May followed family into Sheffield’s cutlery trade before forging his own path, establishing a workshop in Portland Works—the historic birthplace of stainless steel. Today he produces small batches of beautifully made pocket knives that combine traditional patterns with exceptional attention to detail.
